‘Sakura Sakura’ (‘Cherry blossoms, cherry blossoms’), also known as ‘Sakura’, is a traditional Japanese folk song that depicts the season of cherry blossoms during spring. Contrary to popular belief, the song did not originate in ancient times: it was a popular, urban melody of the Edo Period, defined as time from beginning of the seventeenth century to the middle of the nineteenth. The song was later adopted for use by beginner students learning the Koto (a traditional string instrument), and was published in the Tokyo Academy of Music Collection of Japanese Koto Music at the end of the nineteenth century. This set of variations is based on this melody.

Sakura No Hana Variations is based entirely on five notes (A, B, C, E, and F) forming a pentatonic scale that is commonly used in traditional Japanese musics. In contemporary Japanese music, a sixth note (D) is occasional employed to act as a dominant seventh. My attempt here from the very beginning of the compositional process was not to create a guitar piece, but a composition for two Japanese Koto instruments to later be adapted for two guitars. In using extended techniques on the classical guitar, I tried to imitate as closely as possible the Japanese Koto. Each variation is therefore highly significant in its structure, form and timbre nuances.

This is version for pipa and guitar.
